Artist Woos Audience With Sci-fi Posters

July 27th, 2017

Alumnus Joe Tallman (’15) was recently featured in the Rockford Register Star for his artwork that reflects sci-fi movie posters of yesteryear.

After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration from NIU, Tallman, 29, started his own web-based shop, Joe Tallman Illustration. The artist draws mixed-media designs by hand in pencil and then traces them in ink before scanning them onto his computer to color them digitally in Adobe Photoshop.

“I read a lot of comic books when I was a kid,” Tallman told the newspaper. “I like anything with a vintage feel.”

Most of his designs are screen-printed on posters, but his artwork has appeared in many forms, from designs on apparel to album covers, and often addresses issues with a sense of humor.

Like NIU professors, he tries to promote independent thinking.

“Personally, I think you should question everything you’re told through your own research and development,” Tallman says.
