Before the Huskies football game begins Wednesday, November 13, history will be made as Dr. Douglas D. Baker is inaugurated as the 12th president of Northern Illinois University.
President Baker brings a rich background in business, organizational management, and higher education leadership to DeKalb. As provost and executive vice provost of the University of Idaho from 2005 to 2013, Baker guided the development, implementation, and revision of the institution’s strategic plan during a period of fiscal challenges.
Since his arrival in late June, he has identified four areas of focus: student career success, thriving communities, NIU financial and program viability, and ethically inspired leadership. The president’s “Bold Futures” workshops are focusing on how to use and maximize NIU’s human and financial resources to support these four pillars of his administration.
His inaugural address is expected to emphasize these themes and their role in advancing NIU’s mission and vision.
The ceremony begins at 3 p.m. in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium of the Holmes Student Center. The program will also spotlight NIU students, faculty, and staff who exemplify Baker’s goal of student career success through engagement in the classroom, as well as in local, regional, and global communities.
Immediately following the inauguration, the public is invited to join Baker at a reception at the Chick Evans Field House.
For those unable to attend, the inauguration ceremony will be streamed live on the NIU website.
At 7 p.m., the NIU Huskies football team will take on the Ball State University Cardinals. Click here to buy game tickets.
The inauguration is the highlight of several days of festivities that week. Please check the inauguration website for additional details as they become available.
