In 2012, philanthropist and NIU alumna Melody McDonald provided funds for the Betty Larson Piano Scholarship, a competitive award that went to NIU senior Kyle Krause, based on his talent as a pianist.
The 22-year-old, who is majoring in piano performance and composition, was one of the winners of the NIU Concerto Competition this year. He was the first in the history of the competition to win it with a concerto that he composed.
He debuted his concerto Feb. 12 with the NIU Philharmonic Orchestra at Boutell Memorial Concert Hall.
Kyle is the son of Walter and Kimberly Krause of Marengo and has two brothers (one at NIU), who also are pianists.
